Along the way

Where the weekend takes you

We picked them one by one, on the bike, while scouting the route.

Cala Violina and Cala Martina

On the long route, a few kilometres after the start, the first gravel section runs along one of the wildest stretches of the Tuscan coast. A few sandy passages, then the panoramic road above the coves.

Gavorrano

The old mining village at the top of the first real climb of the long route. You climb on gravel, ride through the village and fill your bottles before the last steep pitch.

Caldana

Hill village and first food stop of the long route, after a series of downhill hairpins with Monte Calvo on your right.

The Maremma hinterland

Around fifteen kilometres almost all on gravel, along tree-lined roads with views of the coast. It is the gravel heart of the long route.

Diaccia Botrona nature reserve

A protected wetland between Grosseto and Castiglione, with the Casa Rossa Ximenes among the canals and plenty of migratory birds. Both routes pass through it, and with a bit of luck you see the flamingos.

Castiglione della Pescaia

The food stop on the seafront, for both routes. From here the cycle path takes you back towards Pian di Rocca and the last climb before the return.

I did the route on an e-bike and I am a beginner. I could still enjoy the views, the variety of the route and your flawless organisation.

FAQ

The questions everyone asks

Can I do it? It is my first gravel event.
The short route is made for exactly that. It is 56 km with 560 m of climbing, and you choose it on Sunday morning at the fork, not when you register. There is no timing, you stop whenever you like and along the way there is the food stop in Castiglione. At Punta Ala in 2026 one rider in three chose the short route.
What bike should I bring?
A gravel bike with tyres of at least 40 mm and easy gears. MTBs and e-bikes are fine too, and at Punta Ala in 2026 one rider in three rode something other than a regular, non-electric gravel bike. The route is almost all rideable. Where it gets more technical, or there is sand near the sea, you walk for a few metres. A road bike is not suitable, on these surfaces you need wide tyres.
Is it a race? Are there time limits?
No, there are no rankings and no timing. The food stops do have closing times, though. In 2026 the Caldana food stop closed at 11:30 and the Castiglione della Pescaia one at 15:30, so you know in advance how to plan at the fork.
I am coming alone. Will I meet people?
Saturday is made for that, with the morning social ride, the aperitivo and the prize draw. On Sunday everyone sets off together, and on the climbs the conversation comes by itself. And many come back, more than two hundred people have done a second season with us.
Where do I stay?
At the base, PuntAla Camp & Resort, in the pine wood, with a beach, a bike centre and bike hire. There is a dedicated offer for riders, and the other places to stay in the area are in the guide.
How do I get to Punta Ala? Is there parking and are there showers?
By car from the A12 motorway (Rosignano exit, then the SS1 towards Follonica Nord and the SP158) or from the south on the SS1 (Grosseto Sud exit). The nearest train station is Follonica. There is a large car park at the campsite entrance, and inside there are showers and the bike wash.
Is the route signposted?
No. You follow the GPS track, on your bike computer or with the Ride with GPS app. You find the final track in your personal area, on Ride with GPS, the week before the event.
Is there mechanical support along the route?
No. Bring at least an inner tube, tyre levers, a pump and a first aid kit. Helmet, lights, reflective vest, whistle or bell and mobile phone are the mandatory kit in the rules.
How do I register?
Registration goes through Bike Adventure Series. Create your account on bikeadventureseries.com, then on opening day choose Punta Ala and your ticket. Every rider needs their own account.
Are places limited? Can I register later?
Yes, places are limited. You can also register later on, but in the last editions most individual entries came in the first weeks, during the 109 € presale. After that the price goes up to 129 €.
Do I need a medical certificate if it is not a race?
Yes, it is mandatory, for the safety of everyone riding. You need a certificate of fitness for sport with high cardiovascular effort, or a medical certificate for competitive cycling, valid up to the day of the event. You upload it to your Bike Adventure Series personal area up to 30 days before the event.

At the fork some take the coast towards Cala Violina and some head for the Zinghera woods. Before the Diaccia Botrona the two roads become one again.
